The University Academic Staff Union (UASU) has called an urgent meeting of its National Executive Committee (NEC) to review the government’s latest proposal on settling the Ksh 7.9 billion CBA arrears, signaling a possible breakthrough in the 48-day lecturers’ strike that has crippled learning across public universities.

According to sources within the union, the government has proposed a two-phase payment plan to clear the pending debt owed to university lecturers under the 2017–2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

“We have received the proposal and will reconvene top leadership to evaluate it. A formal position will be communicated to all members,” UASU leadership stated.

The strike, which has dragged for more than six weeks, has caused massive disruption to academic programs, examinations, and graduation timelines.

Key Highlights

✅ Government submits two-phase payment plan worth Ksh 7.9 billion.

✅ UASU NEC meeting set to make a final decision.

❗ Strike remains in force until UASU gives a new directive.

⚠️ Universities facing operational shutdowns due to stalled learning activities.

Egerton University Closed

In the latest development, Egerton University indefinitely suspended academic activities and ordered students to vacate the campus, citing operational paralysis caused by the ongoing strike.

This adds pressure on the government to resolve the stalemate as more universities consider similar closures.

Government Position

The Ministry of Education maintains that the State remains committed to honoring the agreement and attributes the delays to budgetary processing timelines.

“The government is committed to resolving the matter. Discussions are ongoing,” a senior ministry official said.

What Happens Next

UASU is expected to:

deliberate on the payment plan,

consult branch officials countrywide,

announce whether the strike will be called off or continue.

A formal press communication from the union’s NEC is expected within the coming hours/days.

Kisasa News will continue monitoring this developing story.
