December 23, 2024 – The Ministry of Health has issued a comprehensive advisory urging Kenyans to prioritize health and safety during the festive season. Principal Secretary (PS) for Public Health and Professional Standards, Mary Muthoni, outlined guidelines to ensure a safe and joyful Christmas celebration while mitigating public health risks.
“This is a time to connect with loved ones, but it is also essential to remain vigilant against potential risks to ensure a safe and joyous season for everyone,” stated PS Muthoni.
Food Safety Measures
To prevent foodborne illnesses, the Ministry emphasized proper food handling practices, including:
- Washing hands regularly with soap and water.
- Cooking food thoroughly and serving it hot.
- Storing leftovers properly and reheating before consumption.
- Avoiding consumption of uninspected meat or meat from dead animals.
- Keeping raw and cooked foods separate to prevent cross-contamination.
- Using clean, treated, or boiled water for drinking and cooking.
Road Safety Appeals
Recognizing the heightened risks of holiday travel, the Ministry urged motorists to:
- Avoid driving under the influence of alcohol.
- Ensure vehicles are roadworthy and seatbelts are used.
- Take regular breaks during long journeys to combat fatigue.
- Adhere to traffic regulations and maintain safe speeds.
Planning routes in advance to manage traffic congestion was also encouraged.
Public Safety and Security
To enhance safety during festive gatherings, Kenyans are advised to:
- Stay alert in crowded places and safeguard their belongings.
- Keep emergency contacts readily available.
- Handle fireworks responsibly, especially around children.
- Ensure proper sanitary facilities at events.
Individuals with chronic medical conditions are urged to carry sufficient medication for the season.
Disease Prevention and Hygiene
To curb the risk of disease transmission, the Ministry recommends:
- Staying hydrated and avoiding extreme weather exposure.
- Practicing respiratory hygiene, such as covering the mouth when coughing.
- Wearing masks in crowded indoor spaces.
- Sleeping under treated mosquito nets to prevent malaria.
- Practicing safe sex or abstaining.
PS Muthoni also advised seeking medical attention promptly in case of illness.
Mental Health and Wellness
Highlighting the importance of mental well-being, the Ministry encouraged:
- Adequate sleep and physical activity.
- Moderation in alcohol consumption.
- Respect for others’ choices.
- Staying connected with loved ones for emotional support.
Water Safety Guidelines
For those engaging in activities near water, the Ministry urged caution, including:
- Supervising children around water bodies.
- Avoiding swimming alone or while intoxicated.
- Checking weather conditions before water activities.
- Using safety equipment like life vests.
Advancing Public Health Initiatives
During a visit to Kibera Constituency, PS Muthoni assessed the role of Community Health Promoters (CHPs) in advancing preventive healthcare and disease surveillance. She commended their efforts and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to strengthening community health systems as part of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).
PS Muthoni extended Christmas greetings to all Kenyans, emphasizing the importance of road safety, moderation in celebrations, and adopting healthy practices. She also called for community solidarity, encouraging support for one another while remaining vigilant against public health threats such as Mpox and other communicable diseases.
“By adopting these measures, we can make this holiday a time of joy, togetherness, and good health for all,” she concluded.
