In a disturbing turn of events, police officers in Nairobi’s Central Business District (CBD) deployed teargas to disperse peaceful protesters gathered at Jeevanjee Gardens. The demonstration was part of a nationwide march against gender-based violence, organized under the hashtag #EndFemicideKE.
Photographs obtained by Kisasa News captured the chaotic scene, with a police vehicle positioned near the gardens and plumes of teargas smoke enveloping the crowd.
The march, which marked the conclusion of the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, aimed to bring together women, human rights activists, and allies to highlight the ongoing femicide crisis in Kenya.
The official EndFemicideKE social media account confirmed the incident, urging those affected to seek assistance via their emergency hotline, 0716200100. “We strongly condemn this attack on our right to peaceful demonstration,” the group stated.
Reports indicate that the area around the former Nakumatt Lifestyle near Naivas Supermarket was also affected, with several protesters reportedly arrested.
This demonstration follows a similar march held on January 27, 2024, under the banner #TotalShutdownKenyaAgain. The movement, fueled by an alarming rise in femicide cases, rallied Kenyans from all walks of life to demand action.
President William Ruto recently directed the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) to expedite investigations into these heinous crimes. He reiterated the government’s commitment to eradicating femicide and holding perpetrators accountable. Despite assurances from the authorities, the protest organizers remain steadfast in their mission. As renowned gospel artist Kambua aptly stated, “10/12/24 we march against femicide. Every woman deserves safety, dignity, & respect.” This protest also coincided with World Human Rights Day, underscoring the importance of safeguarding fundamental freedoms, including the right to peaceful assembly.
