In politics, as in life, strategy often determines success. While President William Ruto has faced criticism in some areas, his mastery of political maneuvering and strategic planning is undeniable.
Ruto’s determination and focus on achieving critical objectives have become hallmarks of his leadership. He has demonstrated an unparalleled ability to mobilize resources and forge alliances in pursuit of his goals.
A recent example is the visit of Moussa Faki Mahamat, Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC), to Kilgoris, a small village in Kenya’s Narok County.
This visit reflects Ruto’s ability to blend local and continental diplomacy to advance national interests.
On Tuesday, President Ruto met Faki to discuss reforms within the African Union and the upcoming AUC Chairperson elections. Among the contenders for the top job is Kenya’s own Raila Odinga, the former Prime Minister, who has declared his interest in succeeding Faki, whose tenure ends in 2025.
Odinga’s vision for the African Union includes lobbying for two permanent seats for Africa on the United Nations Security Council, emphasizing the continent’s need for stronger representation in global security discussions. Speaking during the Mjadala Afrika debate in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, he reiterated Africa’s right to a more prominent role in global decision-making processes, given its 55-member states.
President Ruto has thrown his weight behind Odinga’s bid, urging Kenyans and international allies to support his candidacy. His backing underscores a strategic shift in Kenyan politics, with Ruto putting aside past rivalries to champion Odinga on the international stage.

Odinga faces stiff competition from Djibouti’s Mahmoud Ali Youssouf and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato, but with Ruto’s diplomatic efforts, his chances look promising. The President’s ability to rally support across political and regional divides may well tilt the scales in Odinga’s favor.
As Kenya eyes this significant continental leadership position, the nation’s political fabric demonstrates unity and determination, signaling a new chapter in its diplomatic engagements. With Ruto at the helm, victory may indeed be within reach, and a victory suit could soon be in order.
