A police officer in Yatta, Machakos, discharged 30 rounds from an assault rifle early this morning following a dispute over a woman. The incident, which took place around 2:00 a.m., prompted a staff member at a local drinking establishment to alert authorities about the disturbance.
When officers arrived at the scene, they discovered the suspect had fled the lounge after noticing their presence. At approximately 5:25 a.m., the officer returned to the police station and retrieved an AK47 rifle, loaded with 30 rounds of ammunition, from the reports office. The firearm had been assigned to a different officer on patrol duty.
Armed with the rifle, the officer returned to the lounge, accompanied by colleagues, due to concerns over potential danger. He reportedly stated that he was attempting to arrest a man he accused of stealing his girlfriend.
In an effort to disarm the officer, fellow police officers approached him from behind, which led to a chaotic scene. The officer then discharged all 30 rounds from the rifle. Fortunately, no injuries were reported, and police were able to successfully disarm and arrest the officer.
The suspect was later taken into custody at Matuu Police Station, where he remains under arrest.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Yatta is currently conducting further investigations into the incident.
