The National Police Service (NPS) has launched a robust multi-agency strategy to enhance road safety and security across Kenya during the festive season. In collaboration with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) and the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), the NPS will deploy additional traffic officers and conduct nationwide enforcement operations.
In a statement released on Thursday, December 5, the NPS announced that the NTSA will focus on enforcing traffic rules along key highways, while the EACC will tackle corruption within the transport sector. Inspector General of Police (IG) Douglas Kanja underscored the urgency of strict compliance with traffic regulations to curb accidents and save lives.
“We have increased the deployment of Traffic Police Officers to ensure smooth traffic flow and are working closely with NTSA to conduct road safety compliance checks on major highways. The EACC will address corruption to ensure accountability during this busy season,” IG Kanja said.
The IG called on all road users, including motorists, pedestrians, cyclists, and boda boda operators, to adhere to traffic laws. “We urge everyone to avoid operating unroadworthy vehicles, speeding, neglecting seat belts, driving under the influence, or engaging in other reckless behaviors. Road safety is a shared responsibility,” he added.
Rising Concerns Over Road Fatalities
The IG also expressed concern over the rising number of road accident fatalities this year. Between January and November 2024, 3,681 people lost their lives in road accidents, compared to 3,469 during the same period in 2023—a 6% increase. Total accident victims surged from 20,239 in 2023 to 21,620 in 2024, marking a 7% rise.
“Road traffic accidents remain a leading cause of deaths and injuries in Kenya, largely driven by preventable factors such as non-compliance with traffic rules,” IG Kanja said.
Enhanced Security Measures for the Festive Season
In addition to road safety initiatives, the NPS has announced heightened security operations to ensure public safety during the festive season. Specialized units, including Formed Police Units and undercover officers, will join regular police in conducting intensified patrols and aerial surveillance in major towns, border areas, worship centers, shopping malls, and critical infrastructure.
Efforts to combat illicit brews and drug abuse will also be stepped up, with bar owners being warned to adhere to legal operating hours. All police officers on leave have been recalled to bolster the enhanced operations.
“Our aim is to ensure that Kenyans enjoy a safe and peaceful festive season,” IG Kanja affirmed, urging the public to cooperate in maintaining law and order.
A United Front for Safety and Accountability
The NPS reiterated its commitment to ensuring security and road safety, urging motorists, passengers, and other road users to remain vigilant and law-abiding. The collaboration with NTSA and EACC highlights the critical role of addressing traffic violations and corruption—key contributors to road accidents and insecurity.
