Opposition leader Raila Odinga waded into the developing story of slain pregnant university woman by calling for speedy investigations into the death of 26-year-old Rongo University Student Sharon Otieno.
Sharon’s body was found in Kodera Forest, Homa Bay County on Wednesday morning in following an alleged cover-up involving Migori Governor Okoth Obado rumored to have been responsible for her pregnancy.
Mr. Odinga, through a post on his Twitter handle, urged the relevant investigative agencies to ensure those involved in her killing are brought to book. “At a campaign briefing this evening for the upcoming Migori Senatorial by-election, I condemned very strongly the brutal murder of the late Sharon Otieno. We observed a minute of silence in her honour”.
He added: “I would like to call upon the relevant investigative agencies to move with speed to ensure that those involved in her killing are brought to book. May her soul rest in eternal peace”.
The demised was abducted alongside a Nation journalist who was pursuing a story implicating Governor Obado in a love triangle.
Mr. Oduor, however, managed to escape a few hours after their kidnapping but managed to jump out of the moving vehicle at Nyangweso Market Center in Rangwe constituency.
He recorded a statement with the Nyanza Regional CID Coordinator where he revealed shocking details of his encounter with unknown assailants.
On Tuesday, the Governor’s personal assistant Michael Oyamo was arrested in connection with the abduction saga. Homa Bay Police Commander Marius said the body of the late Sharon was moved to Rachuonyo Sub county District Hospital mortuary.
Her mother Melida Auma Otieno has blamed the Governor squarely claiming the two indeed had an affair and Obado the governor was “aware” of her daughter’s antenatal visits.
“Okoth Obado knew how the girl was going for medical checkup [sic],” claims Auma Otieno.
“There is evidence in her phone log and texts. The girl’s phone is with the Migori County Commander [Joseph Nthenge],” claimed Auma Otieno.
The varsity student’s mother claims her daughter had been living in fear in the past two weeks. She, however, did not disclose what caused the fear.
“Sharon had sensed danger; she had sensed danger. She could not walk alone; that was why she opted to walk with the journalist, Barack Oduor, whom they were kidnapped with [last Monday]. Last week, that girl [Sharon Otieno] flew to Nairobi. The governor’s P.A. [Michael Oyamo] was the one, who booked her the flight. Besides going to meet the P.A., her journey to the capital city was also business-motivated. She bought clothes there, came back to sell them here [Homa Bay],” said Auma Otieno.
“Out of a relationship that the governor knows how he started with my daughter, [now she is no more],” cried Auma Otieno.
“He lied to my daughter that he would award her business tenders in the county. My daughter even registered a company believing Obado would give her the business deal,” said Auma Otieno.
“On the material day [Monday], I called her [Sharon] at 7pm asking why she hadn’t returned home. Rongo, where she studies, and Yimbo, where I stay, are not worlds apart. She told me: ‘I haven’t met the governor’s P.A. I am still waiting for him’. When I called her again at 8pm, her phone was switched off,” said Auma Otieno.
“The governor should be investigated over my daughter’s death.”
