Bob Munro, the founder and chairman of Mathare United and a towering figure in Kenyan football, has passed away. President William Ruto joined Kenyans in mourning the loss, praising Munro as a transformative leader in sports and a champion of youth development.
Mathare United CEO Jacktone Obure confirmed that Munro, 73, passed away on Sunday morning at his residence in Westlands, Nairobi, after a prolonged illness. Munro’s wife, Ingrid, shared a heartfelt message:
“The family of Robert Donald Munro would like to announce his death. My darling husband Bob, as he is affectionately referred to in Kenyan football circles, has been in and out of hospital for the last six months due to respiratory problems. A beloved father and grandfather, he breathed his last on Sunday, January 19, 2025. Further updates will be provided in due course.”
Munro’s health had been declining in recent months, marked by frequent hospital visits. Despite these challenges, his dedication to the growth of Kenyan football never waned.
Credited with transforming Mathare United into one of Kenya’s most iconic football clubs, Munro nurtured hundreds of talented players and established a legacy that transcended the pitch. His contributions earned him national recognition, including the Elder of the Burning Spear (EBS) award, conferred by President Ruto during the Jamhuri Day celebrations on December 12, 2024.

In a message posted on his X account, President Ruto paid tribute to Munro, calling him “a pillar of our sports and a firm believer in youth development.”
“His drive to make football thrive in Kenya was extraordinary; Bob expertly spotted and nurtured talents, bringing professionalism and integrity to the game,” Ruto said.
Munro’s work extended beyond football, leaving an indelible mark on Kenyan sports and youth empowerment. His legacy will continue to inspire generations to come.
