University lecturers have issued a fresh warning of a nationwide strike in January if the government fails to release their outstanding salary arrears by December 31.
According to the Universities Academic Staff Union (UASU), lecturers are owed KSh 3.85 billion in arrears that were expected to be paid by the end of 2025. The union accuses the government of failing to honour previous agreements and delaying the disbursement of the funds.UASU also says negotiations for the 2025–2029 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) have stalled, leaving lecturers frustrated over what they describe as unmet promises and poor working conditions.
The union maintains that if the arrears are not settled before the deadline, lecturers will withdraw their services when universities reopen in January, potentially disrupting learning across public universities.
The government is yet to issue an official statement on whether the funds will be released in time.Kisasa News will continue monitoring this developing story.
