NAIROBI, Kenya – The Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) will officially open its portal for the September 2025 university intake in March 2025, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba has announced.
In a press statement issued on Thursday, the CS stated that the portal would enable students who sat for the 2024 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams to apply for their preferred university courses.
However, Ogamba clarified that the placement portal has been open since January 24, 2025, for students applying to the Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC), Teacher Training Colleges (TTCs), and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions for their March and May 2025 intakes.
No Cut-Off Points Reintroduced
Addressing concerns over cut-off points, the CS dismissed speculation that the government was reintroducing the system. He reassured students that all 246,391 candidates who attained the minimum university entry grade of C+ (plus) in the 2024 KCSE exams would be eligible for admission.
“The minimum admission requirement for university remains a mean grade of C+ (plus). Therefore, all 246,391 students who attained this grade and above qualify for university admission,” Ogamba affirmed.
University Funding Debate
The CS also refuted claims that the government would require Ksh100 billion to fund university education for the 2024 KCSE cohort. He clarified that the projected annual cost stands at Ksh25.85 billion, with the Ksh100 billion figure representing the total cost over a four-year period.
“Contrary to reports in sections of the media, it will not cost Ksh100 billion to fund university education for the 2024 KCSE cohort in one year. If all 246,391 students enroll, Ksh25.85 billion will be required annually,” Ogamba explained.
The announcement comes as thousands of students and parents prepare for the next phase of the higher education placement process, eagerly awaiting KUCCPS to open applications for degree programs in March.
