The Kenya Forest Service (KFS) has issued a decisive warning to individuals and organizations seeking to encroach on Ngong Forest, reiterating its unwavering commitment to safeguarding the public land.
KFS Chief Conservator Alex Lemarkoko delivered the warning during a site inspection of the ongoing fencing project at the Ngong Road Forest sanctuary block. The initiative, spanning 680 hectares, aims to enhance conservation efforts and curb illegal encroachment.
A Collaborative Effort to Protect a Vital Green Space
The project, valued at KSh 162 million, involves constructing a 14.2-kilometer perimeter fence in collaboration with I&M Bank. Speaking on the progress, Lemarkoko noted, “This partnership, launched in April 2024, is implementing robust systems to secure one of Nairobi’s most critical ecological and recreational zones.”
To date, 11.4 kilometers of the fence have been completed, significantly bolstering security. However, the project has faced resistance from individuals laying dubious ownership claims on parts of the forest.
“Title deeds for gazetted forest land are null and void,” Lemarkoko stated firmly. “We are fencing the forest in line with its gazetted boundaries, and any claims of ownership will not be entertained.”
Challenges and Reinforced Security
The fencing project has also encountered acts of resistance, including a recent attack linked to those opposing the initiative. In response, KFS has strengthened security with the deployment of 2,664 newly recruited forest rangers. Lemarkoko also commended the Community Forest Association for their active role in conserving forest resources through participatory management plans.
Suspension of Licenses
In a related development, Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has directed the suspension of licenses granted to Karura Golf Range Ltd for the development of a golf range and entertainment facilities in Ngong Road Forest.
Duale announced the decision on his X account, citing public concerns over the licenses issued by KFS and the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA).
The licenses, issued on June 14, 2023, and November 28, 2024, respectively, have been suspended, pending a detailed briefing within 72 hours. “My office will provide a way forward on this matter, which has drawn significant public interest,” Duale stated. He also directed KFS to refrain from issuing further special licenses until a comprehensive audit of previously issued permits is conducted.
Commitment to Conservation
The Ngong Forest sanctuary block remains a critical green space for Nairobi, offering ecological, recreational, and cultural benefits. KFS has reiterated its commitment to preserving the forest’s integrity for future generations, emphasizing that any actions threatening its sanctity will not be tolerated.
Report from Kisasa News confirms that both NEMA and KFS have acted swiftly to suspend the controversial licenses, aligning with the government’s conservation agenda.
