Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has unveiled a revised timetable for the popular Nairobi-Kisumu Safari train, addressing the rising demand for travel during the festive season and the return to school. The adjustments, effective from December 31, 2024, aim to better serve passengers heading back to Nairobi after the holidays.

In a statement released on Tuesday, KRC announced that the train will now depart from Kisumu at 6:00 p.m. on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays, a change from the previous departure time of 6:40 p.m. on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Tuesdays. This new schedule will remain in effect until January 15, 2025, allowing travelers to conveniently return to Nairobi as the festive season winds down and students head back to school in January.

KRC’s Managing Director, Philip Mainga, noted that these adjustments reflect the corporation’s commitment to improving travel options in response to increased demand during the holiday period. “The revised timetable is designed to ensure that passengers have more flexibility and convenience as they travel back to Nairobi after the festivities,” Mainga said in the statement.

Extra Train Services for the Holiday Rush

To accommodate the surge in travelers, Kenya Railways had previously added additional trips between Nairobi and Kisumu, which will continue through mid-January 2025. The Nairobi-Kisumu Safari train, known for its scenic 12-hour journey, provides a comfortable and affordable option for those traveling between the two cities, with stops in towns such as Naivasha, Nakuru, and Molo.

With economy class tickets priced at Ksh900 and first-class tickets available for Ksh2,400, the train offers a range of options for passengers. Passengers are encouraged to arrive at least one hour before departure for ticket verification and to ensure compliance with cargo restrictions.

Revitalized Rail Services After Flood Repairs

This schedule change follows a successful restoration of the Nairobi-Kisumu railway line after damage caused by flooding earlier this year. With the necessary repairs completed, the Safari train service is fully operational, once again providing a safe and reliable travel option for the public.

The Nairobi-Kisumu Safari train, launched three years ago, has become a key transportation link, offering both local travelers and tourists the chance to explore Kenya’s picturesque countryside.

Booking and Information

For more details on the revised timetable and to make bookings, passengers are encouraged to visit Kenya Railways’ official website or contact their customer service team.
