The Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) has announced a special Madaraka Express Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) train service to operate on Tuesday, December 17, 2024, facilitating travel between Nairobi and Mombasa.

In a statement issued on Monday, December 16, Kenya Railways confirmed that the train will depart Nairobi at 10:30 a.m. and arrive in Mombasa at 4:30 p.m., ensuring a swift six-hour journey.

“We are pleased to inform you that a special Madaraka Express passenger train will operate on December 17, 2024, departing Nairobi at 10:30 a.m. and arriving in Mombasa at 4:30 p.m.,” read the statement.

The corporation noted that this special service is part of its ongoing efforts to improve travel convenience during the festive season. However, Kenya Railways did not immediately confirm whether this one-way service would be extended to additional days.

Passengers can book their tickets online via www.metickets.co.ke to secure their slots. “We appreciate your continued support and look forward to serving you,” Kenya Railways added.

This announcement follows the recent introduction of a stopover at Voi Station for the Madaraka Express night trains. Effective December 15, 2024, the 10:00 p.m. SGR night trains to and from Nairobi will include a 3-minute stopover at Voi Station.

President William Ruto directed the reintroduction of the Voi stopover earlier this month, in response to requests from travelers and local businesses seeking greater accessibility. “I have directed the Transport Ministry, and they have confirmed that from December 15, the train will begin the night stopover at Voi,” President Ruto stated.

Kenya Railways continues to enhance its services to meet the growing demand for reliable, efficient, and comfortable transportation, particularly during peak travel seasons.
