Thika, Kenya — In a historic gesture that bridges education and innovation, Kenya Airways (KQ) has donated a decommissioned Boeing 737-700 aircraft to Mang’u High School.
This landmark initiative is set to revolutionize aviation education, giving students hands-on experience and a deeper understanding of career opportunities in the aviation industry.
The aircraft, retired from commercial service, was transported from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to the school in an operation that captured national attention. Transporting the massive fuselage via the Eastern Bypass and Thika Road required meticulous planning, with motorists advised to exercise caution during the convoy’s passage.
“This aircraft, once a symbol of global connectivity, now serves as a beacon of education and inspiration for future aviators, engineers, and innovators,” said Hellen Mathuka, Kenya Airways Chief Strategy and Innovation Officer.

A Game-Changer for Aviation Education
Mang’u High School, a pioneer in integrating aviation studies into its curriculum, received the aircraft during a ceremony attended by distinguished guests, including Archbishop Rev. Philip Anyolo, Nation Media Group Chair Dr. Wilfred Kiboro, and KQ executives.
Chief Principal John Kuria, who spearheaded the initiative, emphasized its transformative potential. “This journey began over three years ago, and today we celebrate a monumental achievement. The aircraft will significantly enhance our aviation studies program, equipping students with the practical skills needed to excel in both Kenyan and global aviation markets.”
Aligning with Competency-Based Curriculum Goals
Former Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, who had facilitated the official handover in 2024, highlighted the donation’s alignment with Kenya’s Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). “This initiative underscores the importance of hands-on learning, turning abstract theories into practical skills. Kenya Airways’ act of corporate social responsibility inspires hope and nurtures students’ talents, preparing them for future careers,” said Murkomen.
Celebrating 100 Years of Academic Excellence
The donation coincides with Mang’u High School’s centennial celebrations. Founded in 1925, the institution has a storied legacy of academic and professional excellence. By integrating the Boeing 737 into its curriculum, the school continues its tradition of innovation, providing students with a competitive edge in the aviation sector.
Sustainable and Strategic Vision
Kenya Airways’ decision to repurpose the aircraft highlights the airline’s commitment to sustainability and education. Rather than dismantling and discarding the plane, the donation ensures it remains a valuable resource, inspiring and equipping the next generation of aviation professionals.
“This milestone not only reflects our dedication to corporate social responsibility but also our vision to foster a skilled workforce that will shape the future of aviation in Kenya and beyond,” Mathuka added.
Bridging Education and Industry
The retired Boeing 737 will enable students to engage directly with aviation technology, from exploring cockpit systems to understanding maintenance processes. This hands-on approach enriches theoretical learning and provides practical insights, bridging the gap between education and industry demands.
Kenya Airways joins the ranks of global carriers investing in aviation education, following in the footsteps of Ethiopian Airlines and other industry leaders. The initiative underscores the airline’s commitment to nurturing young talent and contributing to the growth of the nation’s aviation sector.
Wings of Innovation
The “Wings of Innovation” project reflects Kenya Airways’ strategic investment in education. For the students of Mang’u High School, this aircraft symbolizes limitless possibilities, paving the way for rewarding careers in aviation and engineering.
As the Boeing 737 takes its place on the school grounds, it stands as a testament to the transformative power of education and collaboration, inspiring generations to dream big and soar high.
