In a chilling turn of events, Grace Njoki Mulei, a 61-year-old woman who recently made headlines for confronting Cabinet Secretary Deborah Mulongo about the inefficiencies in the Social Health Assistance (SHA) program, has reportedly been abducted.
According to her son, George Mulei, Grace was at Ladnan Hospital in Eastleigh on Thursday afternoon to apply for a knee surgery. During her visit, she called him frantically, saying that individuals identifying themselves as Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) officers had arrived to “take her away.”
“I immediately rushed to Ladnan Hospital, but by the time I arrived, she was already gone,” George said. “Hospital staff informed me she had been ‘taken,’ but no further details were provided.”
The son has since expressed fear for her safety, suspecting that she has been targeted by state authorities following her outspoken criticism of the SHA program. Grace had earlier visited the Ministry of Health to protest what she described as inequalities and inefficiencies in the program, which provides essential health services to vulnerable citizens.
The family is now appealing for urgent intervention to locate Grace and ensure her safety.
“My mother’s disappearance cannot be ignored. We need answers and immediate action,” George urged.
Witnesses reported seeing a black Subaru Outback with registration number KCL 932B at the hospital premises around the time of the alleged abduction.
As of now, the Ministry of Health and the DCI have yet to comment on the incident. Civil society groups and human rights organizations are calling for an immediate investigation into Grace’s disappearance, citing concerns over rising cases of intimidation and suppression of dissenting voices.
Anyone with information about her whereabouts is urged to contact the authorities or the family directly.
This is a developing story.
