Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has signaled a potential political partnership with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, aimed at challenging President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on Wednesday, December 18, during the burial of Agnes Mwikali Muiya in Mbooni Constituency, Makueni County, Gachagua acknowledged Kalonzo’s past support during the late President Mwai Kibaki’s administration. He described it as a “political debt” he is determined to honor.
“Wiper people, led by Kalonzo, have shown us grace. You are our lifelong friends, and when we say it, we mean it,” Gachagua remarked, confirming ongoing discussions with Kalonzo about forming a coalition.
Gachagua did not hold back in criticizing President Ruto’s administration, accusing it of betrayal and failed policies. He expressed confidence in the potential alliance’s ability to reshape Kenya’s political landscape.
“We owe Kalonzo and his people. We are strategizing as Kenyans to improve the economy and end the cycle of lies. To win an election in Kenya, you need 50 plus one. If Kitui, Machakos, and Makueni collectively register 3.5 to 4 million voters, and we bring in 10 million from our side, victory is within reach,” Gachagua stated.
Kiambu Senator Karungo wa Thangwa echoed Gachagua’s sentiments, pledging support for Kalonzo. “Whenever Kalonzo comes to Kiambu, he is very welcome. We will walk with him in 2027,” said the Senator.
Despite being constitutionally barred from seeking elective office due to impeachment, Gachagua’s influence could bolster Kalonzo’s chances of becoming a formidable presidential candidate. Should the alliance succeed, Kalonzo could make history as the first politician to unseat a sitting president after their first term.
Gachagua also hinted at a significant announcement in January 2025, noting that consultations with Mt. Kenya residents would be pivotal before finalizing the alliance.
“We, as the Mt. Kenya people, hate two things: lies and betrayal. Come January, we will announce our next move after consultations. Never again shall we find ourselves in the position we are in now,” he declared during a church service at AIPCA Kangari in Murang’a County.
Gachagua’s speech included pointed remarks aimed at President Ruto. “Mr. President, now we know you, and we will address you accordingly. Respect will be mutual moving forward,” he asserted.
Meanwhile, President Ruto is reportedly consolidating his political base, aligning with Raila Odinga and former President Uhuru Kenyatta. The shifting political dynamics signal a high-stakes contest as the nation prepares for the 2027 elections.
