Former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Wafula Chebukati is currently in critical condition at a Nairobi hospital, where he has been receiving treatment for nearly a week. Hospital sources confirmed that Chebukati has been admitted to the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) and is under close monitoring.
The exact cause of his illness remains undisclosed, with medical details being kept private. However, close family sources revealed to The Star that Chebukati has been declared clinically dead, with most of his organs no longer functioning. This morning, the family was reportedly asked to decide whether to disconnect the life-support machines.
Chebukati, who served as the IEBC chair for a full six-year term, retired in January 2023. He oversaw the General Elections in 2017 and 2022, leaving a significant mark on the country’s electoral processes.
