Controversial blogger and political commentator Maverick Aoko has alleged that the diplomatic missteps witnessed during the African Union Commission (AUC) voting in Addis Ababa were intentional, aimed at ensuring Raila Odinga’s failure. According to Aoko, Raila was merely a “Guinea pig” in President William Ruto’s broader continental political strategy.
In a series of posts on her Twitter (X) handle, Aoko linked the recent AUC elections to Ruto’s long-term ambitions on the global stage, specifically the United Nations. She argued that Kenya’s diplomatic maneuvers were calculated to position the country strategically for future leadership roles, particularly in the race for the UN Secretary-General position.
“António Guterres’ term ends in 2026, and the next Secretary-General is expected to come from Oceania or the Caribbean. If you’ve followed Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, you’d know she’s the likely frontrunner,” Aoko stated.
She dismissed the push by some Kenyan leaders, including MP Caleb Amisi, to front former UNCTAD Secretary-General Mukhisa Kituyi for the UN role, arguing that Kenya stands no chance at this time. According to her, after Oceania, Africa’s next opportunity will come in a decade, likely favoring East Africa.
Aoko further suggested that neighboring countries may have supported Djibouti’s AUC bid to secure future political backing, particularly Tanzania. She claimed that Ruto, anticipating his exit from active politics, is already working to bolster his chances for an international role by engaging in regional conflict resolution efforts in Sudan and the Democratic Republic of Congo, as well as climate diplomacy.
“Ruto wanted Djibouti to win because if Raila had secured the AUC seat, it would have diminished Kenya’s chances of fielding a candidate for UN Secretary-General after Mottley. Those so-called ‘diplomatic blunders’ were intentional,” she alleged.
Aoko concluded by cautioning Ruto’s critics, asserting that his political ambitions “know no bounds.”
