A somber mood has engulfed the continent following the death of Kenya’s former Prime Minister Raila Amolo Odinga, a revered Pan-African leader and one of the continent’s most influential statesmen.

The African Union Commission (AUC), IGAD, and numerous world leaders have conveyed their condolences to the Government and people of Kenya, describing Raila as “a distinguished statesman, reformist, and fearless advocate for democracy and good governance.”

In a statement issued from Addis Ababa, AU Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said:

“The African Union joins the people and Government of Kenya in mourning the passing of H.E. Raila Amolo Odinga, former Prime Minister of the Republic of Kenya. He was a distinguished statesman of the African continent who dedicated his life to the struggle for democracy, unity, and development in Kenya and across Africa.”

The AU Chair further highlighted Raila’s contribution to peace and mediation efforts across the continent, noting his role as the AU High Representative for Infrastructure Development in Africa, where he championed cross-border connectivity projects and regional integration.

“His vision and leadership in promoting Africa’s infrastructure and unity will remain a guiding light for generations to come,” the statement added.

Similarly, the IGAD Secretary-General paid tribute to Raila, calling him “a Pan-African giant whose legacy will continue to inspire leaders across the region.”

Condolence messages have also poured in from African presidents, international organizations, and global leaders who remembered Raila as a courageous reformer who consistently stood on the side of the people — even in the face of adversity.

Back in Kenya, thousands have continued to gather at his rural home in Opoda, Siaya County, lighting candles and offering prayers for the man many fondly called “Baba.”

Raila Odinga’s passing marks the end of an era — a chapter defined by sacrifice, vision, and an unrelenting pursuit of justice and democracy.
