Reasons
1. We are living in a rotten and immoral society where unethical deeds are “positively” publicised and are openly glorified. Who doesnt want glory??,,,Learners too want this “glory”…. They commit crimes with ease, they do it with love. Their ultimate aim is acquiring this ‘glory’….
2. Human beings are like robots when exposed to a similar daily routine … A daily routine is a characteristic very practical and realistic in our schools….teachers and learners are exposed to a definite routine on a daily basis. They get accustomed to the routine and the routine becomes part of them..In short they are conditioned ..Any slight change of this routine has to be met with rebellion of equal measure expressed directly or indirectly…Take for example, the delocolization process currently implemented by TSC specifically on Heads of Institutions is a major cause of change of this routine, culture and tradition..it is a reality that every head of institution has his way of administration and will automatically change the routine which has to be met with resistance both by the learners and the teachers,,,
3. Yes there comes the 100% transition drive. Not a bad idea but realistically not pragmatic. Over 90% of dysfunctional behaviours in schools are championed by functionally illiterate learners who do not find the school environment favourable for them. The push for all learners to transit to high school as opposed to championing for alternative paths like County TVETS is in itself a catalysing factor to instablity and disorder in our public schools as opposed to private schools. Through this conditional transition, schools become dens of dissatisfied group of people who may not directly manifest their displeasure directly but would rather do it indirectly through revolts, burning hostels with books, “slicing” teachers with pangas all in the name of passing a message to the boardroom decision makers.
4. Learners stay with teachers most of their time more than their parents and guardians …. Boarders even take up-to 98% of their time with their teachers…… Teachers are therefore the immediate role models of learners.. They are expected to provide moral direction and positive assurance of good future to the learners….. However, teachers have been denied ‘comfort’ and thus demoralized by the employer TSC and now the Ministry through the “forced” implementation of the unpopular 2-6-6-3 curriculum commonly called CBC,, their powers and authority have been withdrawn directly and indirectly through literally killing their giant Union…they no longer have control over their learners and even their dreams…. It is absolutely true that you can’t advice a person when you are emotionally depressed, when you are withdrawn, when you are demoralized…. Teachers don’t teach these days because its a call but rather because there is no other option for livelihood……. They have been reduced to clerks and robbots… Filling in TPAD and many unnecessary forms at the expense of teaching…. No promotion even after presenting papers….. Ask yourself…. Will teachers really have time to tell students not to riot?….infact they want it in silence done and done repeatedly so that they embark on their personal income generating activities to supplement their meager earnings……….
Oh! I wish some rational and progressive thinking prevails to restore order in the education sector….. This sector is diminishing in silence. Learners are literally getting half baked, generations are being killed in silence…Boardroom decision makers are busy listening to NGOs whose reports are always predetermined to attract further funding…who will bring order in this sector..is chest thumbing really a solution..
Time will definitely tell…
