Tanzania Under Global Spotlight as CNN Investigation Reveals Deadly Post-Election Crackdown

Tanzania’s government is facing intense international scrutiny after a fresh CNN investigation raised serious concerns about the conduct of security forces during the unrest that followed the country’s October 29 general election.

The televised and online report features verified video footage and satellite analysis showing security officers firing during confrontations with protesters in parts of the country. According to the investigation, many of the demonstrators were young and appeared unarmed or holding simple objects, raising questions about the proportionality of force used by authorities.

CNN also highlighted footage captured inside hospitals in Dar es Salaam and Mwanza, suggesting an overwhelming number of casualties during the post-election period. Human-rights groups have described the situation as one of the most serious political crises Tanzania has faced in decades.

In addition, satellite images referenced in the report show recently disturbed ground in a cemetery north of Dar es Salaam. While officials have not confirmed any wrongdoing, civil society organisations and witnesses have called for a thorough forensic investigation.

Following mounting pressure, President Samia Suluhu Hassan—who secured a highly contested victory with a reported 98% of the vote—has announced the formation of a special inquiry commission to investigate the events. However, critics argue that only an independent, internationally supported probe can guarantee transparency.

The United Nations Human Rights Office has also weighed in, urging Tanzania to ensure accountability and to investigate any attempts to conceal evidence related to the casualties.

The government has maintained that security forces acted to restore order after what it termed “violent disturbances” triggered by opposition groups. However, the CNN investigation suggests the situation on the ground may have been far more complex and severe than official statements previously indicated.

As diplomatic pressure grows, analysts warn that Tanzania’s international reputation—and its internal social stability—will depend heavily on the credibility and openness of the investigations now underway.

Kisasa News will continue to monitor and report on developments in this unfolding story.
