Fort Lee, Virginia – A Kenyan woman has made history after being promoted to one of the most senior field ranks in the United States Army.
Major Silvia Jemutai, originally from Kopsiya Poror in Kenya’s Rift Valley, was officially elevated to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel in an emotional ceremony at Fort Lee, Virginia. Family and friends from across the United States and Kenya attended the event to celebrate her remarkable achievement.
During the ceremony, Lt Col Jemutai dedicated her promotion to her late mother, Jacqueline Alice Kirui, describing her as a pillar of strength whose sacrifices and encouragement shaped her entire journey.
“This honour is not mine alone,” Jemutai said. “It belongs to my mother, my family, and every Kenyan girl who dares to dream boldly.” She added that her mother’s guidance opened doors she never imagined and made her success possible.
Jemutai also expressed gratitude to her family, friends, mentors, peers, and soldiers who have supported her career. She acknowledged the profound responsibility that comes with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel, which represents the Army’s confidence in her leadership.
“I am ready to shoulder greater responsibility, make difficult decisions, uphold Army values, and mentor the next generation of rising leaders,” she vowed.
Her promotion stands as an inspiration to Kenyans and women worldwide, demonstrating that dedication, resilience, and bold dreams can break barriers and make history.
