Siaya Luo Elders Now Demand Back Their Osprey For Special Rituals And Funeral

Yimbo Luo Elders in Siaya County now want the government to allow them conduct a special ritual for the migratory bird

The elders led by Mzee Thomas Achando blames the bird’s death oon KWS by flowing it into a different ecosystem in Nairobi.

Achando who is the Yimbo Elders’ Forum Chairman blamed the KWS for the death of the bird, saying that the Osprey should have been treated at the point where it was discovered.

He now wants the government to return the remains of the rare bird so that they can organize a special ritual.

His sentiments were supported by the Luo Council of Elders Chairman in Bondo sub-county Mzee Odida Bwoga who likened the bird to the famous Omieri snake of the Nyakach clan.

Lake Victoria Tourism Association Chairman Mr Dedan Olao also supported the Elders’ opinion adding that the Bird’s death was not only a loss to Yimbo residents but to Siaya County and Kenya as a whole.

Olao added since the bird had created a relationship between the two Countries, it was an opportunity for promoting the domestic tourism in Kenya.

Olao urged the government to initiate talks with the Finland government to have more Ospreys come into Kenya saying that the Yala Swamp is an ideal gazetted bird sanctuary for revenue generation.
