Central Organization of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli on Monday, May 1, urged President William Ruto to give Azimio la Umoja leader Raila Odinga, a job.

Speaking during the Labour Day celebrations at Uhuru Gardens, Atwoli lauded Raila’s numerous contributions to the country and that by giving him a job, it would help end demonstrations scheduled by Azimio

The COTU boss went on to prove his point by giving an example of how former President Uhuru Kenyatta did the same to ensure peace during his tenure as the Head of State.

“Raila Odinga has done a lot of things for Kenya since his youth. We recognize him as a Kenyan leader. The president and his deputy should look at giving Raila a role even if it’s the AU position he used to have or a chairman position so that he can get an opportunity to grace events. Let him not be pushed by people close to him. Some of them used his name to enrich themselves, and we know them. Peace is of paramount importance to our children, and the prosperity of our future Generation depends on peace,” said Atwoli.

The COTU boss remarked that with Raila occupied, the demonstrations by the opposition would come to a halt, arguing that most of those pushing for the return of the demonstrations were only doing so for their personal gain.

He also advised Azimio leaders to reach out to President Ruto or any other senior government officials for a truce.

“I know the President is a person who goes to church, Gachagua’s wife is a pastor, Musalia comes from a Christian family, and Moses Wetangula is my fellow Catholic. They are all forgiving leaders,” Atwoli added.

During his speech, Atwoli remarked that he was among the first people to acknowledge Ruto as president following the Supreme Court ruling that validated his victory in the August 9, 2022, general elections.

“Immediately after the Supreme Court ruling, I was among the first leaders in the country to recognise Ruto as the President. Peace is paramount in this country, I can not let us go the Sudan way where there is conflict due to leadership issues,” he added.
