Census Report: Kikuyu, Luhya and Kalenjin, The Most Populous Communities In Kenya

Census results have indicated Kikuyu community are the most populous in Kenya with 8.14 million people, followed by Luhyas and Kalenjins at 6.82 million and 6.35million respectively. The three tribes make up almost half the total population that stands at 47.6million.

According to the data, President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto’s strongholds will make up a sizeable number that will significantly shape up the political battle for numbers in 2022.

Luos take the fourth position at 5 million people and Kamba takes fifth position with 4.6 million.

Others are Kenyan Somali and Kisii at 2.7 million each while Mijikenda, Meru and Maasai at 2.4 million, 1.9 million and 1.1 millionrespectively.

According to KNBS 33,358 Kenyans did not want to identify with any ethnic group while 183,023 stated they are Kenyans.

Kenyan Arabs 59,021

Kenyan Europeans 1,738.

The data shows that majority (85.5 per cent) of the population are Christians with Protestants, Catholics and Evangelical churches accounting for 33.4, 20.6 and 20.4 per cent respectively.

Muslims accounted for 11 per cent of the entire population.

On ICT, the data shows that females (10,425,040) and males (10,268,651) owned a mobile phone, with 22.6 per cent of people aged 3 years and above used internet while 10.4 per cent used a computer.

Females accounted for 50.2 per cent of the total working population, KNBS notes but more males (50.4 per cent) than females (40.6) were working in urban areas.
